Health insurance is required for the E33G Visa and is highly recommended for the C1 Visa, though it is not mandatory. Travel insurance may suffice for tourists staying in Indonesia briefly, but international health insurance is preferable for digital nomads.

In this article we’ll go over the requirements for the C1 and E33G Visas, compare travel and international health insurance, give an overview of Indonesia’s healthcare system, and more.

The C1 Visa grants tourists single entry to vacation in Indonesia. The E33G Visa allows digital nomads to enter and leave the country for one year while working remotely.

What Do I Need for a C1 Tourist Visa?

C1 Visa travelers need a passport with at least six months of validity, a bank statement showing at least USD $2,000 for the last three months, and a recent color photograph.

The C1 Visa costs IDR 1,000,000 (about USD $56.82) and IDR 1,800,000 (about USD $111.54) for an extension.

Tourists must fill out a Customs declaration form on their arrival or no sooner than 72 hours before their arrival.

Some vacationers may opt for a Visa On Arrival (VoA), but the VoA only allows for a total 60-day trip. For more information about VoAs, check out our article “Complete 2026 Guide to Visa On Arrival in Bali.”

What Do I Need for an E33G Digital Nomad Visa?

E33G Visa digital nomads must have health insurance, a passport with at least six months of validity, income of at least USD $60,000 a year, a remote work employment contract, a bank statement showing at least USD $2,000 for the previous three months, and supporting documents.

The E33G Visa costs IDR 7,000,000 (about USD $397.75) and is valid for one year.

The health insurance requirements for the E33G visa include:

Travel Insurance vs. International Health Insurance: Which Should Digital Nomads Get?

Digital nomads on a E33G Visa should secure international health insurance to meet requirements and to avoid gaps in coverage. Travel insurance is sufficient for most C1 Visa vacationers on short stays.

Expats who stay in Indonesia for six months must enroll in the National Health Insurance Program (JKN), but private international coverage is highly preferable since public plans are not fully comprehensive.

What is Healthcare Like in Indonesia?

Pacific Prime’s State of Health Insurance Report 2025 outlines that Indonesia’s medical sector is strained. Major cities and expat hubs, like Bali, can offer quality care at top hospitals, but rural areas only provide minimal, low-quality care.

Because Indonesia’s healthcare system has variable quality, serious medical cases often require transportation to Singapore, so expats and travelers should always secure medvac coverage.

Please note that the number one medical claim for individuals in Indonesia is motorbike accidents, which travel insurance is unlikely to cover.
