The costs involved in having children overseas can be an enormous financial burden if insurance cover has not been taken out. Hospital costs together with post-natal, pre-natal, labour and delivery costs and unforeseen complications can often exceed USD 15,000. In the unfortunate event of a child being born with congenital defects the costs can far exceed this.

Many expats are unaware that having children overseas can involve astronomical costs and planning ahead is very important if devastating financial implications are to be avoided.

Whilst most international insurance plans do have a maternity option there are restrictions on the amount that can be claimed and for obvious reasons a waiting period of not less than 10 months before any claims for maternity related costs can be accepted.

Identifying the required medical facilities for delivery, post-natal and pre-natal care is an important part in planning a family whilst living abroad. A newborn child should normally be added to a plan within 4 weeks to provide continuous cover. It is usual for an additional premium to be added to cover the newborn child although some plans offer discounts for families which some expats may wish to consider.

Normally maternity cover would include costs related to:

  • Pre and Post-natal treatments & examinations
  • Medically prescribed Caesarian
  • Normal delivery
  • Delivery with complications
  • Delivery following fertility treatment
  • Hospital or Home delivery costs

More comprehensive maternity plans will also cover:

  • Care of newborn children
  • Fertility treatments
  • Congenital birth defects

Hello. I am currently in the us military stationed in the United Kingdom, Currently my fiance who visits from the United States is currently 14 weeks pregnant with no health insurance. While here she has been able to get some health checkups from the British midwives, but it has been our concern how long it will last. Our goal is for her to have our child here in england while we are together , but the only problem is my insurance will not cover her until we are married. What options are there if any, so that i may be able to purchase coverage for her to maintain and have our child here.

I am an Indian living in Indonesia. I would like to have a medical health insuarnce for me and my wife. I travel to USA and Canada quite often. We do not have any health insurance of our own except for the group insurance from my company applicable to me only. I am looking for a long term insurance which will be applicable in Indonesia, India and other countires.

Question: I am a Canadian but have been declared as a non-resident in Canada since 2005 and recently working in Hong Kong. I am planning to get pregnant, prefer to deliver in Toronto. Is it possible for me to purchase the maternity insurance plan beforehand? Is there a waiting period and exclusions?

Question: I was wondering if there is any way of getting an international health insurance plan that will not have a 10 month waiting period for maternity coverage. I am not pregnant now, but I do plan on getting pregnant soon, and do not want to have to pay all the costs for the first 10 months (until the birth) out of pocket. Thanks!

Answer: All the maternity plans that we can provide will have a waiting period attached to the coverage. Waiting periods will change with insurance companies and currently 10 months is the shortest that we can offer. A 10 month waiting period means that you cannot claim for any treatment received prior to having been on the plan for at least 10 months. Maternity plans will offer you a number of benefits including newborn coverage, specialist consultations, complimentary medicine, and will cover you should something happen during the pregnancy
