Thai Cuisine

Thai food is characterized by its predominantly sweet and sour taste and its fiery spice. Thai cuisine is popular among many people around the world for a number of different reasons, and recent studies have suggested that Thai cooking may actually be one of the healthiest types of food in the world.

All dishes served in Thailand begin as a number of fresh herbs and spices, these normally include onions, garlic and galangal (ginger). Turmeric, coriander, lemon grass, and chilies are then added and the dish is usually garnered with coriander, basil or spring onions. Soups and stews are extremely prevalent and fish or meat is usually added to give the mixture some consistency, however most Thai dishes will always have a traditional herb and spice base.

Some of these ingredients are not used very often outside of Thai cooking. Galangal is a prime example of this. Galangal is a close relative of the ginger root and is mainly found in South and South East Asia and it is used fairly often in Chinese medicine. Galangal is known to alleviate abdominal discomfort, ease the digestion process, cure hiccoughs and cure diarrhea.

Many Thai foods can help alleviate and stop symptoms for a number of conditions, take Tom Yum Gung for example; it is a spicy and sour soup that is served with shrimps and contains all of the above ingredients. The Universities of Kyoto and Kinki in Japan along with Thailand’s Kasetstart University have been studying the health affects of eating this soup. Initial studies have shown that Tom Yum Gung could be very good in helping to stave off cancer. The levels of south Asian's with cancer is extremely low when compared with the rest of Asia and many western countries. Scientists have attributed this to a diet consisting of many health positive ingredients.
