For foreign nationals in Sri Lanka all this can mean that the local healthcare system is highly suspect in terms of western standards. It is only in the capital, Colombo, where there is an adequate level of high class hospitals and physicians. Outside of Colombo, in other parts of the country, it can be extremely difficult to obtain quality coverage, especially in the event of a severe illness or injury. In many of these cases non Sri Lankan nationals will have to be medically evacuated back to Colombo or even repatriated to their home country.

When you are in a new country it can be difficult to know how to act and which local laws and customs should be followed. It is especially important to understand this in Sri Lanka due to the ongoing struggle between the Sinhalese and Tamil ethnic groups. With this in mind we have provided some advice for travelers in Sri Lanka. Please be advised that this information is liable to change and that you should consult a travel professional before visiting or, relocating to, the country.
There have been limited cases of violent crimes against foreign nationals. Most crimes are between ethnic Tamil's and Sinhalese, however in recent years there have been cases where foreign nationals have been mugged or robbed. The main type of crime against expatriates in Sri Lanka is theft. Take care to keep all of your valuable belongings in a secure location.
Travelers should avoid any political protests or demonstrations. Stay away from military instillations as these are frequently targets of terrorist attacks. Be advised that there are frequent general union strikes which may result in essential services (power, water, public transport) being shut off.
If you plan on driving a car during your stay in the country all due care should be taken. Road conditions can often change dramatically from place to place and there is a high occurrence of traffic accidents involving cars, motorbikes, and pedestrians. It is advisable for foreign nationals to travel by taxi as these are inexpensive and usually the safest form of road transport. Women, however, should be wary when traveling by themselves at night.
There have been reports of piracy in the waters surrounding Sri Lanka. There have also been reports of ships and vessels being attacked. Make sure that if you are planning a boat trip, you do not enter a restricted area, the Sri Lankan navy has been known to fire on vessels in secure maritime zones.
While European views on dress and lifestyle are generally tolerated you should also take care not to cause offence. Do not enter a temple wearing anything on your head, and always remove your shoes, even if you are wearing sandals. Do not pose for photographs, or stand in front of, a statue of Buddha as this can be a severe cultural insult.
Same sex relations are illegal, as is the use or possession of any narcotic substance. Crimes, or alleged crimes, against children are treated very seriously and can result in long term prison sentences. In addition to these guidelines you may also be penalized with a fine if you smoke or drink in public.
Emergency medical treatment is not readily available outside of Colombo and there are a number of serious diseases and conditions that are endemic to the country. Malaria, Dengue fever, Hepatitis, and Chikungunya disease can all have potentially serious and long lasting consequences. You should consult a medical professional before you visit the island and ensure that you have adequate protection against disease.
In addition to the potential diseases that can be found throughout the country there are also sporadic outbursts of serious and dangerous violence.
Generally Sri Lanka can be a safe and fun place to visit if you pay the proper amount of respect to local customs and laws. Always follow official directions in regards to any situation and make sure to contact your government's representative if anything should go wrong.

My new job required me to travel extensively abroad away from Japan. So I purchased an International Medical Insurance plan from Pacific Prime and was very pleased with their professional and efficient service.
We have to honestly thank you for how you handled our claims issue. When we called you up from the hospital in the USA while we were away, you gave us the advice that we desperately needed. Honestly, we didn't know where else to go, or who to contact in that situation! Because of you a nerve racking situation was eased, and we got the help that we wanted. Thanks Anthony, without your help we don't know what we would have done.
