  • Kenya Travel Tips

When traveling in, or relocating to, a new country it is helpful to be aware of the local laws and customs as well as to be aware of any possible areas of danger. Kenya is a low-income food deficit country and as a result, crime and poverty are higher than in many well developed countries. This is more common in city slums and other deprived areas which are normally not visited by tourists and expatriates.

A visa is required for entry into Kenya for visitors from various countries, and can typically be obtained upon arrival in Kenya for a fee of USD $50. Please check with the Kenya High Commission office to see if your passport requires a visa for entry into Kenya here: http://www.kenyahighcommission.net/visas.html

You are required to have at least three months of validity left on your passport to enter Kenya.

Most visitors who wish to drive in Kenya require an international driver’s license, which are easily obtained through motor departments in your home country. Some foreign driver’s licenses, such as UK licenses, are valid for driving in Kenya. Please note that road conditions in Kenya are poor and it is advised to avoid driving at night.

There is a high threat of terrorism in Kenya currently. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by travelers or tourists.

For the two months following a widely-disputed presidential election at the end of 2007, Kenya experienced wide-spread rioting, violence and protest which displaced several communities. On February 28, 2008 President Kibaki and opposition leader Odinga signed a power-sharing agreement which saw an end to this unrest but Kenya continues to remain fragile and tense for the time being.

For 2007, the most common problems tourists and expatriates required consular assistance for were stolen passports, arrests for a variety of offences, deaths (mostly natural), and automobile accidents.

There could be muggings and gang attacks at any time of the day. There have been a number of armed attacks at remote areas of golf courses. It is advised to stay in hotels and resorts with security fences at all times.

It is highly recommended to carry comprehensive travel and medical insurance when traveling to Kenya. Medical facilities are scarce in many areas of Kenya and as such, it is advised to have an insurance plan that includes emergency medical evacuation. Also be sure to check your plan details for any exclusions, so that you can be sure that you are covered for all activities you wish to take part in.

Kenya Insurance Testimonials

My new job required me to travel extensively abroad away from Japan. So I purchased an International Medical Insurance plan from Pacific Prime and was very pleased with their professional and efficient service.

Kenzo Kotaro Yoshida, Japan

We have to honestly thank you for how you handled our claims issue. When we called you up from the hospital in the USA while we were away, you gave us the advice that we desperately needed. Honestly, we didn't know where else to go, or who to contact in that situation! Because of you a nerve racking situation was eased, and we got the help that we wanted. Thanks Anthony, without your help we don't know what we would have done.
