Czech Republic Medical Insurance News

Healthcare in the Czech Republic is an issue that has been plaguing the nation since the end of Communism. The Czech Republic has been struggling to implement Western healthcare, which Czech citizens expect to be provided by the state which stems back to ideals fermented during their previous political system. However, recently there have been serious debates over implementing new fees associated with doctor's visits, out-patient, as well as in-patient and out-patient charges that would help finance the rising cost of healthcare. As standards have increased, the prices for service, medication, and hospitalization have also increased significantly in the Czech Republic making international health plans the best way to assure your safety.

According to Radio Prague, the Czech government plans to apply reforms which will greatly influence medical costs for individuals and families. When these earlier reforms passed in 2007, liberals in the Constitutional Court claimed that the rulings were against the Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms. Now, politicians and signatories are telling the people to either “ignore the law or refuse to pay the fees.” Over 60 public figures including, musicians, historians, writers, artists, and politicians have all urged citizens of the Czech Republic to perform acts of (non-violent) civil disobedience to demonstrate social unity and revolt against the reforms. Simply “don't pay” has been a common attitude among many Czech citizens. Former Prime Minister Jiri Dienstbier commented,

“This law is very bad and if it is employed there is a danger it will endanger and weaken the health system and make bureaucrats of doctors and nurses who will have to fill a lot papers and will not have enough time to treat their patients. Sure, it's a law but a lot of laws passed by our parliament have mistakes and then have to be changed or fixed. So this is just kind of message, it's a signal.”

Several citizens of the Czech Republic have no problem paying the extra costs that may be associated with healthcare; however public debate ensues over the validity of these “fees” in regards to the Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms. Most citizens maintain that it is unjust for the government to charge more for a visit to the doctor because they believe these services have already been paid for through Czech taxes and medical insurance. Government officials stand by their argument that the extra fees are necessary in order to expand the quality of Czech Republican healthcare in a world of increasing medical costs. Although the full effects of these reforms will not be known for some time, this healthcare debacle will undoubtedly affect expats and Czech citizens alike.
