Whether you simply fall ill or have a serious accident that requires medical attention while traveling, it is important to know where the nearest medical facilities can be found. Therefore we have provided a list of the important hospitals in the UAE as well as medical centres and clinics that would be suited to providing medical treatment. 

While there are some differences in the provision of healthcare in the different emirates, emergency treatment can be obtained from public hospitals in all emirates. Most emirates require travel insurance for tourists and health insrance for epxats in the UAE, emergency medical treatment is provided free of charge, but it is important to know that once the life threatening conditions have been treated, any further stay in hospital will be chargeable.

Public Hospitals    

In Dubai, public hospitals are owned and administered by either the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), or by the UAE Ministry of Health (MOH). Residents can apply for a Health Card, which enables them to avail of public health services at highly subsidized rates. Public healthcare facilities in Dubai are generally of excellent standard, although they can be quite busy during peak hours. If you are involved in a road traffic accident, you will most probably be taken to Rashid Hospital, which receives the majority of trauma cases in Dubai. If the Rashid is very busy, trauma cases are generally received by the Dubai Hospital.

Latifa Hospital is a hospital for mothers and children. It is one of the largest maternity and children's hospital in UAE and was built in 1987. The hospital was earlier known as Al Wasl hospital and was renamed Latifa Hospital in January, 2012. Latifa Hospital provides tertiary care for maternal and neonatal services including paediatric and neonatal surgery as well as treatment for genetic and metabolic cases. The hospital is affiliated to the Red Crescent Society of Iran. It offers its own health card but even without a card, the prices are very reasonable. Some medicines are also dispensed free of charge. The hospital is rather busy, particularly at the walk-in clinic during peak hours, but it is a good place to go for treatment if you have a limited budget and no government health card or private health insurance.

Abu Dhabi Hospitals

In Abu Dhabi, public hospitals are owned by SEHA, the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, and are managed in conjunction with various world renowned hospital groups, such as Cleveland Clinic and Johns Hopkins Hospital. Patients with private health insurance are welcome in all SEHA facilities, and direct billing with most international insurers is usually not a problem.

Road traffic accident victims are usually taken to the Mafraq hospital which has one of the largest trauma units in Abu Dhabi.
