5 tips to make the expat life work for you
Are you about to move abroad as an expat? Let’s be real. While expat life can be exciting, going out of your comfort zone and venturing into the unknown isn’t always easy. Working with a number of expats over the past two decades, the team at Pacific Prime has compiled these 5 tips to help you make the most out of this new chapter!
1. Treat it like a fresh start
A change of scenery might just be the thing you need to quit bad habits such as smoking. So make the most out of creating new routines and rebuilding your daily life!
2. Speak to as many people as possible
The more people you speak to, the more likely you’ll make friends. In other words, you’ll have a support system. Without this, expat life can be lonely and difficult.
3. Get to know your local area
Do you know all the streets and corners of your local area? If not, put on your walking shoes, get out there, and find out. Soon, the familiarity will turn into a sense of belongings.
4. Embrace new customs
Speaking of the local area, try to have an open mind and embrace new customs. Otherwise, you’ll be living in your expat bubble without appreciation for the place you’re now calling home.
5. Take advantage of travel opportunities
Don’t forget that you may only be a short flight away from exotic locations in neighboring countries. It would be a shame not to explore!
Before you make the move, you should also make sure you’re properly insured. This enables you to access the best healthcare abroad without having to pay out of pocket.

Does health insurance cover sports injuries?
Sprained your ankle while playing football? Or perhaps you suffered a serious injury from rugby or another dangerous sport? While sports injuries are all too common, insurance coverage is not always guaranteed.
As Pacific Prime works with individuals from all walks of life, including sports lovers and adrenaline junkies, we often get asked the burning question: “Does health insurance cover sports injuries?”
In today’s video, we’ll answer this question. That being said, there’s no easy answer to the question. As always, whether or not sports injuries are covered will depend on various factors.
Before we recommend a plan, we always seek to understand clients’ needs and requirements. We generally ask them:
-
Do you play sports for leisure? In most cases, sports injuries from non-dangerous and non-extreme sports are covered. We warn adrenaline junkies that sports that aren’t usually covered include rugby, bungee jumping, skateboarding, and more.
-
Are you a professional athlete? Are you playing competitively? In other words, is there money involved? If this is the case, then chances are that sport injuries won’t be covered, and you’ll need to get specialized insurance instead.
Of course, no two plans were created equally. This means that we make sure clients are aware of the exclusion list in their table of benefits, so that they’re clear over what is and isn’t covered. The last thing we want is for them to have a plan that is much more limited than they thought.
Would you like a plan that’s customized to your needs? Contact Pacific Prime, and we’ll make sure you can play the sports you love - without worrying about the cost of sports injuries.

Pacific Prime's 5 tips for buying dental insurance
Whether you need to go for a routine check-up or for a major dental procedure like root canals, you’re probably aware of how expensive dental care usually is. If you’d like to lower the costs of dental treatment, why not secure a dental insurance plan?
As a health insurance broker, Pacific Prime has over two decades of experience helping clients buy dental insurance (amongst many other types of insurance), and we’ve picked up some good-to-know tips along the way.
In today’s video, we’ll share them with you:
-
Understand dental insurance: Before you secure a plan, understand what dental insurance is and how it works. Dental insurance covers the cost of dental treatment. It’s a ‘rider’ or, in other words, a paid-for optional extra attached to a health insurance plan.
-
Determine your dental needs: To secure the most optimal plan, consider how often you visit the dentist, whether you have major dental problems, and where you usually seek dental care.
-
Review your current plan (if any): Do you have a health insurance plan? If so, review the plan and pay attention to exclusions or limits. It might be a good idea to get a ‘top-up insurance plan’ and only pay for dental cover.
-
Familiarize yourself with insurance terms: Understanding insurance terms will help you compare dental insurance more effectively. These terms include ‘benefits and limits’, ‘deductible/excess’, ‘pre-existing conditions’, ‘provider network’, etc.
-
Seek advice from a health insurance broker: Reach out to a health insurance broker like Pacific Prime. Rest assured, we’ll help you find the best solution for your needs and budget.

Inpatient vs. outpatient insurance
Looking to buy a health insurance plan? One of the first questions your broker or insurer will ask you is whether you want a basic, inpatient-only plan or whether you want outpatient insurance as well. Confused by insurance jargon? Don’t worry - this Pacific Prime video breaks it down for you!
As a global health insurance broker with over two decades of experience in the sector, we’re very acquainted with clients’ misconceptions about health insurance, and understand how to simplify key terms and concepts. So without further ado, let’s unpack what our video has to say about inpatient and outpatient insurance!
Here’s a quick summary about inpatient vs. outpatient insurance:
-
Inpatient insurance: This type of insurance covers you in the event you’re hospitalized overnight, including things like hospital and intensive care rooms, diagnostic tests and medicines during your stay, surgery expenses, and more. Most health insurance plans offer inpatient insurance as a minimum.
-
Outpatient insurance: This type of insurance covers you in the event you’re not hospitalized overnight, including for things like doctor consultation fees, diagnostic tests and medicines, vaccinations and scheduled health check-ups, and more. Outpatient insurance is treated as an optional extra in most health insurance plans.
We advise those who visit the doctor frequently to consider getting outpatient insurance. Although costs may not be that high, they certainly do add up over time.

Pacific Prime’s 5 healthcare tips for expat women
From birth control options to maternity-related care, expat women have a number of health considerations to deal with. If you’re an expat woman, or soon to be one, this Pacific Prime video is for you.
As a global health insurance broker, we have been advising globetrotters on healthcare and health insurance matters for over two decades now. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, we turn our focus to women.
Here you’ll find 5 healthcare tips for expat women:
1. Get a pre-departure health check: This includes getting vaccinated against essential diseases, and asking how to access medications in your new country if you’re taking any regularly.
2. Securing access to birth control: Countries have different regulations when it comes to birth control, so your preferred choice may not be easily accessible. Look into all your options, including barrier methods, short-acting hormonal methods, and long-acting hormonal methods.
3. Understand the healthcare system: Crucially, figure out if you’ll have access to a gynecologist under the public healthcare sector. Consider securing private health insurance to access the best healthcare without paying out of pocket.
4. Familiarize yourself with health problems: Discover some common ones in a hot climate, including prickly heat rashes, yeast infections, and urinary tract infections (UTIs). Once you’re aware of them, you can take steps to prevent them.
5. Plan ahead for pregnancy: If you’re looking to start a family abroad, consider securing maternity insurance to cover all the costs relating to pre/postnatal care and delivery. International plans are especially handy if you travel often or are looking to relocate.

That’s why our team of experts have designed this concise video to familiarize our viewers with the three most common types of health insurance for traveling, as well as what to consider when selecting the right kind of insurance.

Making yarn wigs to empower children with cancer
In October 2019, Pacific Prime Dubai held a unique team building activity that was both fun and charitable. During the activity, teams made around 50 yarn-wigs which will be used by children with cancer. Since one of the side effects of chemotherapy treatment is a sensitive scalp, children find it uncomfortable to wear traditional wigs.
Designed to encourage laughter and happiness among children during a different time in their lives, the yarn-wigs will help children in Egypt, Pakistan, and the UAE enjoy a normal childhood.
