Question:
I am 63 years old and I am Bi-polar. My care is managed through daily medications and twice annual blood annilization confirming health (no stress)of my thyroid and confirmation of proper lithium levels. I was diagnosed 15 years ago and once the proper levels of medications were established I have been perfectly healthy. Please let me know the position foe me to be accepted as a expat in Costa Rica or Panama.

Answer:
Pacific Prime can offer comprehensive expat medical insurance plans to foreign citizens residing in Costa Rica and Panama. Where many health insurance policies will restrict coverage for individuals over the age of 65, plans offered by Pacific Prime are usually guaranteed renewable ensuring that you will have access to quality healthcare for your entire life. Policies which we work with are typically internationally portable and will usually allow you to use the doctor or hospital of your choice, anywhere in the world.

We work with a number of leading international health insurance companies which can offer substantial Psychiatry and Psychotherapy benefits. In most cases if Psychiatry and Psychotherapy benefits are applicable under your policy, treatment will typically be covered only on an in-patient basis, unless otherwise specified. In some instances we can advise on plans which offer out-patient coverage with a Psychiatric treatment benefit. If the plan does cover out-patient psychiatric treatment then this benefit will usually be subject to strict limits as to the amount of reimbursement or treatment you may receive during the policy year.

Please be advised that if an expat health insurance policy offers an out-patient psychiatric treatment benefit the coverage will normally be attached to a waiting period. This means that you must be enrolled in the plan for a certain amount of time before you are able to claim for treatment related to psychiatric issues. Any psychiatric treatment received prior to the completion of the health insurance waiting period can not be claimed for under the policy. The waiting periods associated with an out-patient psychiatric treatment benefit will vary between insurance companies, and may even change between specific policies.

It is important to be aware that most international health insurance will not typically cover pre-existing conditions. A pre-existing medical condition is one which has displayed symptoms, required treatment, or of which the policyholder has been aware of prior to enrolling in the health insurance plan. Generally, international health insurance plans will normally handle pre-existing conditions in one of the following ways:

Exclusion

If the insurance company excludes the pre-existing condition from coverage under the plan then you will not be able to claim for treatment of the condition, or any related symptoms. Treatment not related to the pre-existing condition will be covered as normal under the policy benefits.

Moratorium

The insurance company may elect to place a moratorium, or waiting period, on the coverage of the pre-existing condition. A typical moratorium will last for 24 months. This means that if you have not received treatment for the condition, been prescribed any medications, or if the condition has not displayed any symptoms, it may be reconsidered for coverage under the plan once the waiting period has been completed.

Coverage with Loading

In some cases it may be possible to obtain coverage for specific conditions in return for a higher policy premium. While not available for all pre-existing conditions, Coverage with Loading may be offered on a case-by-case basis by the insurer, and the coverage will vary between insurance companies.

Medical History Disregarded

If you are purchasing a group international health insurance policy then it may be possible to obtain a Medical History Disregarded (MHD) benefit. Typically only available to groups of 20 or more people, an MHD benefit will allow for the coverage of all pre-existing conditions present in the group.
