Doctors and health care staff in China's public health care system generally do not speak English. As such, foreign patients in China generally opt for health care at private hospitals and medical clinics where English speaking Doctors are available and and high standards of modern, medical facilities. Healthcare facilities are located predominantly within urban areas of China, with rural areas providing basic medical clinics and town hospitals. Private healthcare facilities are virtually non existent in rural areas of China. As such, in the event of a serious illness or accident, emergency evacuation will be required to reach a hospital in Shanghai, China or overseas to Hong Kong or Singapore. Foreign patients may experience language barriers and lower standards of health care within Taiwan's public healthcare system. As such, foreign patients generally visit private hospitals and medical clinics. Healthcare facilities are generally available throughout the country, however outside of urban areas the medical care can also be limited. In the event that you require evacuation due to a serious medical condition, an international travel health insurance policy with an emergency evacuation benefit will ensure that you are transported to the nearest centre of medical excellence. In some cases this may mean transportation to a high quality hospital with China or Taiwan, evacuation to an outside location such as Hong Kong, or even repatriation to your home country.
