CIGNA is made up of two American health service companies that merged together in 1982: the Insurance Company of North America (INA) founded in 1792 and the Connecticut General Corporation, founded in 1965. After the companies merged, they created the name CIGNA, combining the initials INA and CG.
Over the years, CIGNA has expanded into a large global insurance company with over 66 million members. CIGNA and its subsidiaries together offer one of the largest health service organizations in the United States offering an array of health benefits in medical, dental, behavioral health, pharmacy and vision care benefits. With its head office remaining in Philadelphia, CIGNA also has offices located throughout Europe, Asia, the United Kingom, Central Amercia, as well as Canada, New Zealand and Indonesia.

In 2009, CIGNA received a “Customer Experience Excellence Award” and in 2005, CIGNA won “Best Health Plan Initiative for Consumer Directed Health Care” and “Best Technology Introduced by a Health Plan Organization for Employee/Consumer Choice”.
In 1993, CIGNA designed the logo ‘tree of life’, featuring a large tree with a green background. The logo was selected to represent the company's direction and core values including 'growth, protection, stability, caring, and nurturing'. In 2011, CIGNA adopted the motto “Go Deep, Go Global, Go Individual!”. With reference to the CIGNA logo and company motto, CIGNA's customer dealings are personal with a view to understand 'individual needs at a deep level'.
