While the country is now battling its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/uk-health-coronavirus-southkorea\/south-korea-orders-schools-to-shut-as-covid-19-cases-spike-idUKKBN28O09Q?edition-redirect=uk\">latest wave of outbreak<\/a>, Education Minister Yoo Eun-hae said high school students in their third year will be the first to return. Allowing these students to return first would help them to make decisions regarding their college and career. Kindergartens, elementary schools, and middle schools will open later on.<\/p>\n<h3>Updated schedules<\/h3>\n<p>Nearly 23 million students in Vietnam returned to school for their new academic year in September 2020, amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2020-09\/05\/c_139345358.htm\">Xinhua News<\/a>, their opening ceremony &#8211; usually packed with live performances &#8211; was unlike previous years. Instead, it was shorter and compliant with COVID-19 prevention measures. Many performances and the parade to welcome first-graders were dropped in this updated schedule.<\/p>\n<p>In Austria, schools started again on January 7th, but only through distance learning. Face-to-face lessons have been pushed back to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.at\/20210120\/when-do-schools-open-again-in-austria-and-who-needs-to-wear-a-mask\">January 25th<\/a>. However, the Austrian government plans to roll out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-austria\/austria-to-roll-out-5-million-coronavirus-tests-for-school-pupils-idUSKBN29E0HL?edition-redirect=in\">5 million coronavirus testing kits<\/a> for students.<\/p>\n<h3>Smaller class sizes<\/h3>\n<p>While Italy has postponed reopening schools to high school students, classes will likely be in smaller sizes when they reopen. Students will be seated 1 meter apart from each other. Also, they will be divided into various learning groups, and entry will be staggered. To make up for it, schools will be open for lessons on Saturdays.<\/p>\n<h3>Spaced-out seating arrangements<\/h3>\n<p>As one of the first European nations to close schools, shops, and restaurants, Denmark <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2020\/04\/17\/europe\/denmark-coronavirus-first-school-intl\/index.html\">welcomed children back into the classroom<\/a> on April 15, 2020 \u2013 making it the first European country on lockdown to do so. Desks are arranged in a way that ensures students sit at least two meters apart. Children aged 2-12 were also sectioned off into groups of 12 called \u201cprotective bubbles\u201d. These groups arrive at school at staggered times, and eat and play separate from one another. Nonetheless, Danish schools have returned to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-12-06\/denmark-plans-partial-lockdown-of-main-cities-after-record-cases\">partial closure since December<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Meals in classrooms<\/h3>\n<p>In an attempt to prevent students from gathering in large groups, students at Dajia Elementary School in Taiwan ate their lunch on school <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-taiwan-schools\/taiwan-school-uses-dividers-during-lunch-to-counter-coronavirus-idUSKBN21029K\">desks fitted with plastic dividers<\/a> in late April 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, instead of eating with classmates in the school cafeteria, kids in America are either picking up their lunch to eat at home or in the classroom. According to the results from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/2020\/6\/23\/21300529\/school-lunch-as-we-know-it-is-over-coronavirus-school-nutrition-directors\">School Nutrition Association survey<\/a>, which comes out in June 2020, more than 80% percent of schools now offer food via drive-through pick up. On the other hand, over half offer walk-up services.<\/p>\n<p>Though schools are currently closed in the UK, they nevertheless provide free food vouchers for students who meet the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/covid-19-free-school-meals-guidance\/covid-19-free-school-meals-guidance-for-schools\">benefits-related free school meals eligibility criteria<\/a>. Teachers aged 60 and older were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2020-03-24\/coronavirus-queensland-teachers-over-60-should-not-be-in-class\/12076220\">advised to avoid classrooms<\/a> on March 20, 2020 even before schools in the country closed. However, as cases continued to climb in 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/coronavirus-is-it-safe-for-kids-to-go-back-to-school-and-what-about-the-new-mutant-strain-152979\">in-person lessons were replaced<\/a> by distance learning for many students in Australia.<\/p>\n<h3>Distancing throughout school premises<\/h3>\n<p>Students in Germany were taught how to maintain social distancing in schools when they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-8296177\/Germany-goes-school-Pupils-shown-social-distance.html\">reopened on May 7, 2020<\/a>. The country is likely to follow similar precautionary measures when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/12\/14\/us\/german-school-close-coronavirus-lockdown.html\">schools reopen again in mid-January<\/a>. Social distancing is required for pupils both in and out of their classrooms. Some schools have also taped markers on the floors to help people maintain a safe distance and face the right direction. Likewise, micro-groups of students in Denmark have individual zones in school playgrounds.<\/p>\n<h3>Social distancing headwear<\/h3>\n<p>School kids in China are now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/11491258\/schoolkids-wear-three-metre-wide-hats-social-distancing-return-chinese-classrooms\/\">wearing one-meter wide hats<\/a> to help maintain social distancing in the classroom.
