One outbreak occurred on a South American cruise ship based in the Galapagos Islands.\u201d &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncezid\/dfwed\/diseases\/brainerd-diarrhea\/index.html#:~:text=What%20is%20Brainerd%20diarrhea%3F,first%20outbreak%20occurred%20in%201983.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CDC<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This condition is characterized by \u2018sudden-onset, watery, explosive diarrhea,\u2019 it is seemingly immune to antibiotics, and people afflicted by this condition typically experience 10 \u2013 20 episodes per day. Accompanying symptoms include cramping, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting.<\/p>\n<p>For treatment, various antimicrobial agents have been tried to no great effect, including trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, ampicillin, metronidazole, and paromomycin. But relief in symptoms can be provided via high doses of opioid antimotility drugs, such as loperamide, diphenoxylate, and paregoric. Unfortunately for those affected, the symptoms can last a year or more and will come and go.<\/p>\n\n<h2>3. Cancrum Oris<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cCancrum Oris is an acute gangrenous stomatitis of oral and para-oral structures in the age group between 2 to 16 years, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, with high morbidity and mortality.\u201d &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3450384\/#:~:text=Acute%20necrotising%20gingivitis%20and%20oral,%2C%20tetracycline%2C%20metronidazol%20and%20clindamycin.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cancrum Oris: A case report<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Cancrum Oris, or Noma as it\u2019s also known, begins with inflamed gums and cheeks followed by ulcers with foul-smelling drainage. This disease attacks the face, destroying tissue and tearing through the lips, face, and cheeks of those afflicted. Unlike most infections, it can spread through anatomical barriers such as muscles and cause severe and permanent physical damage to its sufferers.<\/p>\n<p>It generally occurs in young, severely malnourished children between the ages of 2 and 5, and is especially prevalent in areas with poor sanitation and unsafe drinking water. It also seems to target malnourished, dehydrated, and often immune-compromised children, such as kids born with HIV.<\/p>\n<p>In most cases, it will kill you, but one in ten sufferers survive. The survivors will suffer permanent damage to their faces and have lifelong scars, but at least they are still alive.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Ebola<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe Ebola virus disease (EVD), formerly known as Ebola hemorrhagic fever, is a rare but severe, often fatal illness in humans.\u201d &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/ebola-virus-disease?gclid=Cj0KCQiA14WdBhD8ARIsANao07htLyWDDp5R3raz6XcYML3suZVxeUOFbWw7_sWn3p6GKZdMd_F2UrEaAmJQEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WHO<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Discovered in 1926, the Ebola virus caused 2 outbreaks in Africa, one in what we know now as Nzara, South Sudan, and the other in Yambuka, DRC. And in recent times, the 2014 &#8211; 2016 outbreak in West Africa was swiftly dealt with by the international community to stem the spread across the continent and the globe.<\/p>\n<p>For sure, a lot has been learned from the experience of dealing with Ebola in the last few decades, especially the way it spreads through human-to-human transmission via broken skin with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Blood or body fluids of those infected or who had died from Ebola; and<\/li>\n<li>Surfaces and items contaminated with body fluids from a person sick with Ebola or the body of a person who died from Ebola.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2>What can I do to protect myself from diseases?<\/h2>\n<p>With so many terrifying diseases out there, how does one protect oneself from illness? Here are some healthy habits to protect yourself from disease and prevent germs and infectious diseases from spreading:<\/p>\n<h2>1. Handle and prepare food properly and safely<\/h2>\n<p>Always wash your utensils and surfaces where you plan to prepare food. Cook at the correct temperatures and keep foods in the right storage areas and at the right temperatures.
