Cigna Health Insurance For Thailand Expats
The most suitable plan you can get as an expat in Thailand from Cigna is international or expat health insurance, which covers medical health expenses depending on the plan you have secured. Let us delve into the standard plan in detail.
Thailand is a tropical paradise for foreigners. While discovering the Kingdom’s wonders, unforeseeable events such as mosquito-borne diseases, mental health illnesses, and injuries could happen.
Accessing Thailand’s public healthcare system usually has long wait times, making it difficult to treat emergency conditions. To ensure that you will get treated promptly, you are recommended to opt for their private healthcare services.
You will then be able to enjoy their state-of-the-art medical facilities as well as English-speaking staff, alongside specialist care and consultation without needing to wait for months.
However, receiving services at private hospitals can be costly. But by getting insured, you won’t have to fork out money for medical treatments out of pocket as long as these treatments are covered in your plan. The insurer will settle the payment to give you peace of mind so that you can concentrate on your recovery.

Flexible Coverage
Flexibility is probably one of the biggest advantages of securing health insurance with Cigna. Their plans provide add-ons and adjustments to adapt to your budget and needs accordingly. Let’s take a look at the components of the plans.
Coverage Total
The plan is divided into three different levels: silver, gold, and platinum. The plan level determines the coverage amount in total, which is USD $1,000,000, USD $2,000,000, and unlimited for the three plan levels respectively.
Coverage Area
You have two areas of coverage to choose from: worldwide excluding the USA and including the USA. Keep in mind that if you choose worldwide coverage including the USA, the premiums rate will be greatly increased due to the high administrative costs, expensive technology, and drugs in the country.
Coverage Payment
You can pay with three currencies, namely USD, EUR, and GBP. You can choose to pay with different currencies at your convenience.
If the quoted premium happens to have exceeded your budget, you can also adjust it by utilizing a wide range of deductibles and cost shares (co-pay). This way, you will have to pay less premium, but more out of your pocket in cases of medical services and treatments. The options are as follows.
International Private Medical Insurance | Silver | Gold | Platinum |
Deductibles (the amount you must pay before any claims are covered by your plan) | USD $0 / $375 / $1,500 /
$3,000 / $7,500 / $10,000 |
USD $0 / $375 / $1,500 /
$3,000 / $7,500 / $10,000 |
USD $0 / $375 / $1,500 /
$3,000 / $7,500 / $10,000 |
Cost share after deductibles (the percentage of each claim not covered by your plan) | 0% /10% / 20% /
30% |
0% /10% / 20% /
30% |
0% /10% / 20% /
30% |
Out-of-Pocket Maximum | USD $2,000 or $5,000 | USD $2,000 or $5,000 | USD $2,000 or $5,000 |
What’s more, you have the freedom to choose how often you want to pay for your policy, annually, quarterly, or monthly.
Your premium will be slightly lower if you pay for longer terms at once. Extra 11.11% and 7.78% will be charged for monthly and quarterly payments, respectively.
You can make payments by debit or credit card only if you choose to pay monthly or quarterly. For premiums paid annually, bank wire transfer is also accepted.
Elective Modules
If you are looking for wider coverage, you can add optional modules to cover areas that are not included in the standard plans. There are 4 optional modules designed by Cigna: international outpatient, health and well-being, vision and dental, and international evacuation and crisis assistance.
- International Outpatient (OP): This covers outpatient care where hospital admission is not required. For example, consultations with general practitioners (GP) and specialists, outpatient rehabilitation, prescribed outpatient drugs, etc.
- International Health and Well-being: This provides you with the tools to manage your overall health and well-being, such as routine physical examinations, preventive cancer screenings, and access to counselors for emotional support and wellness coaches for improved physical and mental well-being.
- International Vision and Dental: This covers your preventative, routine, and major dental treatments. And for vision, routine eye examination, and costs for glasses and lenses.
- International Evacuation and Crisis Assistance Plus: This provides you cover for medical evacuation in case of an emergency and global crisis response services. Those could include costs for compassionate visits, emergency transport to a center of medical excellence, medical repatriation, etc.
Eligibility for Cigna
Cigna’s international health insurance is available to all people living abroad aged under 99 and over 18. That being said, there are also some geographic restrictions to its application you must be aware of:
- Country restrictions: A second address must be provided if the address on the application form is an address in Cuba, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Iran, Israel, Libya, Sudan, or Syria.
- Coverage restriction: Cigna cannot cover individuals residing in the following countries or cities: Afghanistan, Cuba, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Guernsey, Hong Kong, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, North Korea, Singapore, Sudan, or Syria.
- U.S. to U.S. affiliated country restrictions: For citizens in the U.S., Cigna cannot cover those currently residing in Guam, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands, or any U.S. Minor Outlying Islands.
It is important to note that in some countries, although not covered by international health insurance, we can also provide you with options that provide coverage in those areas. Nonetheless, Thailand is not under geographic restrictions. Hence, expenses under the policy-listed items will be covered.
Exclusions
Despite Cigna’s wide coverage, they have a list of exclusions that clearly state the services that are not included in their Global Health insurance package. Here are a few examples:
- Non-emergency treatment obtained from an out-of-network provider
- Services or supplies that are not medically necessary
- Assistance in activities of daily living
- Services provided by local, federal, or state government agencies
