‘Revenge travel’ surges in the post-pandemic world

As COVID-19 travel restrictions ease and borders open up once again, many airports around the world (especially in Europe) are facing travel chaos and flight cancellations to an unprecedented extent. While there are many factors to explain this outcome such as staff shortages and labor strikes, one theory gaining traction is ‘revenge travel’. In this Pacific Prime article, we’ll get you up to speed.

What is ‘revenge travel’?

Like any other new trend, there’s no dictionary definition for revenge travel as yet. But the number speaks for itself. Let’s take research conducted by Allianz Partners as an example. The insurer looked at American travel to Europe this summer and concluded that it will increase by a whopping 600% compared to last year. As Daniel Durazo, director of external communications at Allianz Partners USA, explained:

“The pandemic made people realize you can’t take travel for granted and many Americans are eager to visit Europe this summer.”

So, what is revenge travel? Put simply, it’s making up for the lost travel time during the pandemic. As many airports aren’t yet prepared to deal with the surge in travel (given that they had to lay off staff in the last couple of years), it’s no wonder that the supply side isn’t able to keep up with demand. Add to the fact that rising inflation and a cost of living crisis have prompted labor strikes, and travel chaos and flight cancellations suddenly become explainable.

How can you be smart about ‘revenge traveling’?

If you too are experiencing wanderlust and have the means to travel, then ‘revenge travel’ might sound like a pretty good idea. While it’s certainly not without downsides – as we’ve established, there are many travel hacks that can help make your journey much more enjoyable and comfortable. And yes, this includes money-saving travel hacks. Here are our top tips for revenge traveling in 2022:

    • Travel off season and be flexible: Why travel during the peak seasons or times? If you have the flexibility, avoid traveling during school holidays, weekends, or public holidays. This way, you can travel when it’s cheaper and less crowded.
    • Book flight using incognito mode*: Did you know that you could be seeing inflated ticket prices whilst browsing for flights online? This is because many websites use your data to price discriminate against you. For the cheapest flights, be sure to use incognito mode or clear your cache at the very least.
    • Use credit card points: If you’ve got credit cards, check if there are travel-related promotions. For example, some credit cards provide access to airport lounges. In addition, you can use credit card points to get deals on flights, hotels, and more!
    • Get travel insurance: Whether it’s flight cancellation, baggage delay, or even medical-related emergencies, securing travel insurance is by far one of the best money saving travel hacks.
    • Buy a local sim card: Don’t just use roaming on your phone and see your phone bill rack up. Consider buying a local sim card with a good data and calling package to save yourself some money.
    • And so much more!

*Alternatively, consider alternatives to flying. Not only might this save you money, but you’ll also be lowering your carbon footprint in the process!
