Morning Sickness

Don’t spend half your day with your head down the toilet! There are some ways to reduce nausea. First thing first is portion control at breakfast time. If you have too much food, then you’re body will have a harder time getting rid of it should morning sickness kick in. If you have too little, then that can contribute to feeling nauseous, which in turn will make you not want to eat. Eating a healthy and balanced diet is vital, so the baby is getting all the nutrients it needs.

If you’re really having a hard time eating, then at least ensure you stay hydrated. You lose fluids when you’re sick, so it’s important that you replace lost fluid. Stay away from caffeinated drinks, as well as dairy. Those can cause stomach upset. If morning sickness is really bugging you, then try having some ginger and honey with hot water.

If you’re hungry, but feeling sick, then stick to light meals. Consuming fatty, heavy foods can cause stomach upset later on. Not only that, but calorific foods aren’t exactly full of nutrients that expecting mums need. If you’re taking vitamins and supplements, then ensure they’re taken with food and not on an empty stomach.

Water Retention/Swelling

Rest is essential and sleep is a healer! Take regular breaks throughout the day in the later stages of pregnancy and make sure you’re not constantly on your feet. Taking part in activities that require a lot of energy in the mid to later stages of pregnancy can take it’s toll. Ensure you have half an hour lie-downs or sit in a comfy chair throughout the day.

Comfy clothes are a must – especially when that due date is ever nearing. Choose lighter fabrics for the summer and cosy loose-fitting clothing for the winter. Wrap up warm, so you don’t catch a cold and avoid clothes that don’t have much give, such as non-stretch jeans. Go for clothes that won’t be restricting on the stomach, such as dresses and long jumpers.

Swimming is another great reliever of swelling and water retention. Set time aside every week to take a trip to the pool and get moving in the water. If your swelling is painful, then this can relieve that too as the water makes you weightless. Treat yourself to a massage before those ankles become super sore! If water retention is your main problem, then eat more potassium, such as bananas and reduce your intake of salt.

Unhealthy Cravings

Keeping on the healthy track can be difficult throughout those nine months, especially when all you crave is chocolate! There are ways to keep unhealthy cravings, such as drinking herbal teas in between meals. By doing this, you’ll stay fuller for longer. Green tea also holds properties that have the ability to suppress sugar cravings, so make sure you drink plenty!

Creating a weekly food plan can also help as that way you can include certain foods that can help the baby. Cooking from scratch is also recommended as this helps ensure you’re preparing fresh food and not grabbing packet foods that can be full of unhealthy preservatives.
