1. Liwan District

Liwan District is perfect for expats who are fans of shopping and site-seeing. The district has walkable streets with malls, shopping centers, and dining opportunities galore. This district also has fairly affordable housing, especially compared to other city center options.

Liwan Lake Park is a scenic area with trails and pagodas. It’s famous for its photo opportunities, and images are also commonly used in stock photos. Living here, you would see the park in real life.

It’s important to note that this is a fast-paced city environment that may be difficult for families, especially since the majority of schools for expats are not located nearby.

2. Yuexiu District

Yuexiu District is another city-center-oriented district that’s perfect for expats who want to rely on Guangzhou’s subway system. It is also close to medical facilities and international schools. Although the district is older, there are some benefits to living in this historic district.

Due to the older age, there are many affordable housing opportunities in this district even though it’s near the center of Guangzhou. There are also high-end housing options on Ersha Island, a place that is popular with officials and executives.

3. Haizu District

The Haizu district is a great place for expats to find supermarkets and other conveniences. It’s a popular location for tech industry professionals, so it’s a fantastic place for tech industry expats. It also features wonderful parks and green spaces to explore.

The Haizu District is separated from the Tianhe District by the Pearl River. It’s in the southern end of the city-center-oriented districts in Guangzhou.

4. Tianhe District

For expats who can afford the rent in Tianhe, it promises more of the comforts of home than some of the other districts. The district has international markets and shops with Western amenities. It also has some great museums and parks to explore.

In the Tianhe district, there’s the South China Botanical Garden, opera houses, and the Guangdong Museum for art lovers. 

Tianhe is a busy, population-dense portion of Guangzhou because it’s the modern city center of Guangzhou. It’s also home to universities and many major businesses.

5. Huangpu District

For expats who don’t mind less access to the western shopping options, Huangpu District is a great district! It’s further from the city center and is home to several major industries. There are pharmaceutical companies, financial firms, and biotechnology businesses. 

If you work in these fields, don’t be afraid to settle down in the area. The District is recommended by other expat families.

Be aware that if you work in the city center, Huangpu District can be a bit of a commute to downtown Guangzhou.

6. Pangyu District

Pangyu District is a great option for expats who don’t need to worry about commuting to downtown Guangzhou. The area is the perfect place for families because the air quality is better than the busier city center. 

Pangyu District also has many parks and some international school options. The area is popular with expats, so you can look for housing near other expats and markets with Western options. If you have the budget, you can even find communities with gyms and services.

Outside of the expat communities, you can also find affordable housing since it’s further from Guangzhou’s city center.

7. Huadu District

Huadu District is one of many great options for expats who want to be further away from the city center. The District still has metro line access and houses Baiyun International Airport. There’s a nearby resort that’s popular with tourists and expats in China who want a vacation.

8. Baiyun District

Baiyun District is perfect for expats who want greater access to both the metro and the international airport in nearby Huadu District. It’s also located on a few metro lines despite being further from the city center than many other districts. 

Baiyun District is home to a couple of international schools for expats with families. There’s also an abundance of parks and green spaces for recreation.

The highest-end housing can be found in compounds around the Baiyun Mountains.

9. Zengcheng District

The Zengcheng District is perfect for ecologically-minded expats because the development in the area is focused on drawing in ecologically responsible tourism. In this district, there’s the benefit of rapid development as well as preserved mountain trails and waterfalls.

Zengcheng is pretty far from the city center of Guangzhou. That makes this district best for digital nomads or expats that qualify for jobs closer to Zengcheng.

10. Congua District

For expats who want a rural feel, the Congua District is a more rural district on the outskirts of Guangzhou. The district was recently incorporated into Guangzhou. Congua is well-known for its many hot springs and beautiful nature.

11. Nangsha District

Despite being a shipping hub, the District has a slower pace than the city center. There are no high-rise buildings, and nature is easily incorporated into the area. 

12. Foshan

Expats who have a job in Foshan or want to avoid Guangzhou can live in Foshan. It is a neighboring city with public transportation between Foshan and Guangzhou. The city hosts some of the automobile, chemical processing, and biotechnology industry in China. 

Foshan is southwest of Guangzhou.

13. Dongguan

Expats who are employed by businesses in China and the Guangzhou area may live in Dongguan. Dongguan is another neighboring city of Guangzhou to the southeast. It hosts manufacturing and IT industry headquarters.
