What are the health insurance requirements for Saudi Arabia?

As of January 2006 the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has had a scheme mandating health insurance coverage for foreign nationals who are legally residing and working in the country in the private sector (non-government). Partly in an attempt to encourage additional participation in the Kingdom’s private healthcare system, and partly to prevent abuse of the public facilities afforded to Saudi nationals, all resident expatriates in Saudi Arabia must have some form of comprehensive health insurance policy from an approved cooperative health insurance company in KSA.

How many people in Saudi Arabia have insurance?

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia offers a comprehensive National Health Service type scheme for all Saudi citizens and expatriates working in the country’s public sector. Expatriates or Saudi citizens working in the private sector are required to have some form of employer provided health insurance. This is a recent development in the regulation of the Kingdom’s healthcare system, as it was previously only foreign private sector workers who were mandated to obtain private health insurance.
