Do you offer maternity plans without waiting periods?

Index of Questions

Question: I was wondering if there is any way of getting an international health insurance plan that will not have a 10 month waiting period for maternity coverage. I am not pregnant now, but I do plan on getting pregnant soon, and do not want to have to pay all the costs for the first 10 months (until the birth) out of pocket. Thanks!

Answer:

All the maternity plans that we can provide will have a waiting period attached to the coverage. Waiting periods will change with insurance companies and currently 10 months is the shortest that we can offer. A 10 month waiting period means that you cannot claim for any treatment received prior to having been on the plan for at least 10 months. Maternity plans will offer you a number of benefits including out-patient coverage, specialist consultations, complimentary medicine, and will cover you should something happen during the pregnancy.

Maternity plans will usually also provide you with newborn coverage. This is especially important in the event that your child is born with any medical conditions as the costs associated with treatment can be expensive. It is important to note however, that a newborn child coverage benefit will also be attached to a waiting period. In some cases this may be the same waiting period as the maternity coverage, the shortest waiting period that we can provide for newborn coverage is 6 months from the start of the plan.

In regards to new born coverage there are typically two options. The first is for the child to be “born into the plan”, this means that they will be covered with the same benefits as the mother receives and are guaranteed continuing coverage for the rest of their life no matter what the state of their health is at birth. It is important to be aware that if the child is born into your plan the premium will normally rise and that you must notify the insurer of the birth in order to receive continuing coverage. The second option is for a “free benefit” which will typically cover the infant for the first 30 days of life or up to a predetermined financial sum. Once the coverage limit has been reached you must make an application for continuing coverage, a free benefit does not increase the plans premium.

We can offer a number of options in regards to international health insurance maternity plans. All the policies that we offer are guaranteed renewable for life and globally portable, and in many cases we can tailor the coverage options to meet your specific needs.
