The costs involved in having children overseas can be an enormous financial burden if insurance cover has not been taken out. Hospital costs together with post-natal, pre-natal, labour and delivery costs and unforeseen complications can often exceed USD 15,000. In the unfortunate event of a child being born with congenital defects the costs can far exceed this.

Many expats are unaware that having children overseas can involve astronomical costs and planning ahead is very important if devastating financial implications are to be avoided.

Whilst most international health insurance expatriate plans do have a maternity option, there are restrictions on the amount that can be claimed and for obvious reasons a waiting period of not less than 10 months before any claims for maternity related costs can be accepted.

Identifying the required medical facilities for delivery, post-natal and pre-natal care is an important part in planning a family whilst living abroad. A newborn child should normally be added to a health insurance expatriate plan within 4 weeks to provide continuous cover. It is usual for an additional premium to be added to cover the newborn child although some plans offer discounts for families which some expats may wish to consider.

Normally maternity cover would include costs related to:

  • Pre and Post-natal treatments & examinations
  • Medically prescribed Caesarian
  • Normal delivery
  • Delivery with complications
  • Delivery following fertility treatment
  • Hospital or Home delivery costs

More comprehensive maternity plans will also cover:

  • Care of newborn children
  • Fertility treatments
  • Congenital birth defects

Around US$4.53 billion is spent every year collectively by medical tourists within Asia, particularly in Singapore, India, and Thailand.
