Turkey Medical Insurance News

The overall quality of healthcare is extremely varied. The Turkish healthcare system is set up as a mixture of government (public) and privately owned medical facilities and there are options available for any sort of treatment. In recent years the Turkish economy has seen resurgence and as the country evolves and starts to remove the high levels of debt and inflation that it has experienced previously, the healthcare industry grows with it.

Government run healthcare services are available in almost every Turkish city and village and will be able to provide you with basic medical treatment. However many of these facilities are massively under funded and woefully understaffed. As such these facilities may not be able to offer anything other than stabilizing treatment in the event of a medical emergency and a transfer to a higher quality hospital may be necessary.

In the major cities (Istanbul and Ankara) there are a number of university hospitals that are publicly funded, and many people consider these to be the best medical facilities in the country as they boast some of the nation's best qualified medical professionals and higher levels of funding than would normally be associated with a public healthcare facility. Accessing these ‘better' public hospitals can be difficult however, as they do provide cheaper than normal services. This means that the ordinary Turkish national will be able to receive treatment there at little or no cost leading to massive overcrowding and limited services for anyone not in need of immediate, emergency care.

It is this overcrowding, coupled with the growth in the Turkish economy that has lead to the development of an extremely comprehensive private medical network in the country. Treatment and service standards at the private hospitals and medical facilities in Turkey are on par with the ‘international' standards that you would expect anywhere in the world, and generally these facilities will be able to provide excellent care for their patients.

Private medical facilities are, however much more expensive than public sector hospitals. And while this means that they are less crowded and that they do provide high quality services, it also means that receiving treatment at one of these hospitals or clinics can be a major financial burden. This is starting to change however, as a number of private hospitals in Turkey are developing a medical tourism industry whereby prices at these facilities are comparatively much lower than would be associated with a top tier medical facility in another country (England or the USA).

The healthcare system in Turkey offers the patient a number of choices in regard to their care. The best treatment, however, will usually be quite expensive, unless it is obtained at a crowded university hospital.
