There is a risk of indiscriminate terrorist attacks throughout the country and as such all travelers are advised to exercise extreme caution and follow all government or official directions in the event of an emergency situation.

There is a moderate risk of crime throughout Russia. The most common incidents with which foreign nationals and expatriates require assistance are cases of petty theft or robbery. It is advisable that you leave all valuable items in a safe place and that you do not walk on the streets alone at night. In St. Petersburg there is an even higher risk of crime against tourists, and you are advised to exercise caution

There are a number of confidence tricksters in Russia who prey on tourists and foreign nationals. You should be wary of anyone who tells you that you have one a money prize or who states that they need to hide money. The number of reported confidence, or 419, scams has increased substantially in recent years.

Due to the current tensions in Chechnya all travel to that region is discouraged. If you plan to travel to this region then you must have all the correct documentation that is required by the Russian government. Please be advised that by traveling to Chechnya you are risking your safety and that your nation’s government may not be able to assist you in the event that anything goes wrong.

Holders of an international driving permit are allowed to drive in Russia, however you should expect seriously deteriorated road conditions, especially when outside of the major cities. Homosexuality is illegal throughout Russia, and while relaxed attitudes have developed in major urban areas there is still a high degree of risk. Public displays of affection between same sex couples are strongly discouraged.

The major health concern in Russia is the prevalence of HIV/Aids. Do not expose yourself to any undue risk. Due to the extreme climate in Russia there is a risk for environmental health problems. Take care to protect yourself from the cold, and drink plenty of water in the heat.

It is a legal requirement for foreign nationals to carry their passport at all times while in Russia, a photocopy will not suffice. In the event that you are caught without your passport you are liable to an on the spot fine.

Russian currency (the Ruble) is not widely available outside the country. It is advisable to obtain the currency ahead of time, or to purchase money once in the country. If you wish to change currency this should be done with US dollars or Euros.
