After nearly 500 years of Portuguese colonial rule, Mozambique became fully independent in 1975 following a bloody conflict which led to successive large scale emigration, economic dependence on South Africa, severe food shortages and a civil war after the Portuguese had left. • Mozambique Travel Tips

Whenever you travel overseas it is often useful to understand the local laws and customs in the destination country, as they can often be very different to your own. The Mozambican legal system may be similar to that of many western countries; however there are a few differences in culture which are worth noting as to avoid possible trouble. As such we have provided some Mozambican travel advice so that you may stay safe and better enjoy your travels, throughout Mozambique, the birth place of western civilization.

Please be advised that the information contained on this page is not fully comprehensive and may be liable to change without prior warning; as such you should consult a travel expert or your local embassy prior to departing on your journey.

    • From November to April is the tropical cyclone season in Mozambique. During this time of the year coastal areas of central and northern Mozambique can be at risk. It is common for widespread flooding around river basins, especially the Zambeze. You should monitor local media during times of flooding or cyclones for any announcements regarding road blockages or safety concerns.
    • In Maputo, and increasingly in other towns, robbery, using knives and firearms, is prevalent on the streets. You are most at risk particularly during the night. Remain vigilant, especially when near entertainment centres, bars, clubs etc. and avoid using ATM machines on the street. Use well-lit, populated streets, and avoid walking anywhere at night alone. If attacked, remain calm, offer no resistance and hand over possessions without question. If possible, avoid eye contact.
    • There have been increased incidents of bag snatching from tourists and thefts of unattended bags in Maputo and around Mozambique. These incidents are particularly more common during the tourist seasons. Safeguard and avoid displaying valuables and cash publicly, this greatly increases your chances of being robbed. Deposit these items in a hotel safe when possible. Keep some money, photocopies of your passport, valid visas and other important documents in a separate place to the original documents.
    • Vehicle theft, commonly at gunpoint, can occur anywhere. Do not pick up strangers or stop to assist apparently distressed motorists or pedestrians. It is advised that you keep your doors locked and remain driving, as hijackers commonly use these techniques to trick motorists into stopping their vehicles.
    • Remain on alert whilst visiting beaches, especially on offshore islands. They may appear isolated and safe but they are not policed.
    • In Mozambique′s Northern provinces (Nampula, Cabo Delgado, Zambezia, Niassa) all known minefields have been cleared. In the central and southern provinces (Sofala, Tete, Manica, Gaza, Inhambane, Maputo), however, you should be aware that mines and unexploded ordnance do still exist in remote, rural areas, away from main routes. Mine clearance programs are underway, however it is advised you avoid these areas. If you do need to be travelling in these areas seek advice from district authorities.
    • Only travel by road outside Maputo and other major cities during daylight. Where possible, keep to major sealed roads in reasonable states of repair and travel with other cars in rural areas. Fuel is often only available in major towns.
    • It is advisable to not travel to high density, low-income suburban areas at any time during your travels. Travels to rural Mashonaland, rural Manicaland and farming areas should be restricted to all but essential travel. There have been a number of serious incidents in rural areas and it is dangerous for farmers or agricultural workers to visit former properties or other agricultural areas.
    • Third party insurance cover is compulsory whilst in Mozambique. These can be purchased at most land border crossings or where there are insurance company offices.

Mozambique Insurance Testimonials

My new job required me to travel extensively abroad away from Japan. So I purchased an International Medical Insurance plan from Pacific Prime and was very pleased with their professional and efficient service.

Kenzo Kotaro Yoshida, Japan

We have to honestly thank you for how you handled our claims issue. When we called you up from the hospital in the USA while we were away, you gave us the advice that we desperately needed. Honestly, we didn't know where else to go, or who to contact in that situation! Because of you a nerve racking situation was eased, and we got the help that we wanted. Thanks Anthony, without your help we don't know what we would have done.
