An expat health insurance plan will provide you with medical cover in Italy and any other country you may visit worldwide. Expat health insurance plans are normally purchased when residing outside of your home country and are designed for those living and traveling overseas. If you decide to relocate to another country, or return to your home country, your expat health insurance plan can travel with you, affording you with flexibility to meet your changing needs.

Government sponsored medical insurance schemes, such as Medicare, will not normally cover medical expenses outside of the country which sponsors it. As such, you will not be able to use your Medicare benefits when you travel outside the USA. If your CIGNA health insurance policy offers international coverage, including Italy, you may be entitled to your CIGNA plan benefits when traveling in Italy. However if you have a CIGNA plan that offers treatment in your country region only, then it is unlikely that your CIGNA policy can be used outside the USA.
